Winter Wellness

As the weather gets colder and the days grow shorter, it can be easy to want to stay curled up indoors until warmer weather returns. It’s important, though, to make an effort to stay active and give your body the extra care it needs during colder months. Here are some tips for winter wellness.

 

1. Get outside & exercise

It can be hard to motivate yourself to get up and go outside when the air is frigid. However, even just a short, brisk walk will get your blood flowing, which can increase your mood and energy levels naturally. You’ll also get some Vitamin D from the sun, which is crucial during the winter months. If you’re a dog owner, going on a daily walk is a great way to get some much needed physical activity. Be sure to bundle up!

2. Eat plenty of fruits & veggies

It’s tempting to eat only hearty comfort foods during colder weather, but it’s important to keep a variety of fruits and veggies in your diet during the winter months. Try blending your fruit into different kinds of smoothies throughout the week and adding a side of veggies to your dinners. Your body will thank you for all of the natural vitamins and minerals!

3. Stay social!

Winter can naturally cause you to be isolated from other people. While some “me-time” is certainly beneficial, try to remain social by setting dates with friends and family members. Consistent social interaction with loved ones will help keep your spirits high when the temperatures are low. Grab coffee, see a movie, or engage in fun winter activities like ice-skating!

4. Let your body rest

Did you know? With shorter, colder days, our bodies naturally require more sleep. Don’t deprive your body of the rest it needs! You’ll begin to feel the negative consequences of sleep deprivation and be more susceptible to illness if you don’t sleep long enough. Try going to bed 30 minutes earlier than you do normally. You’ll feel more refreshed and ready to take on the day!

5. Join a gym or at-home fitness program

Indoor exercise is the way to go for those days when going outside is just not an option. Consider joining a gym if you haven’t yet, or signing up for group fitness classes, like yoga or Zumba. If you don’t want to make the journey to the gym, workout at home with exercise videos or a virtual gym subscription. The options are endless when it comes to home fitness programs, and you won’t have to venture outdoors to get active!
